The word bonsai is literally Japanese for tree in a pot. These miniature trees are traditionally grown in trays or pots and originate from the seeds of full-sized species.
Bonsai plants can be kept indoors or outdoors, provided the weather conditions aren’t too extreme.
Indoors or outdoors, temperatures above 50° F are suitable for your bonsai tree, but be sure it gets sufficient sunlight and water.
Choosing a bonsai tree is uncomplicated; for beginners we recommend the Dwarf Juniper Bonsai pictured to the left, as it’s a sturdy tree and is easy to care for.
By now you’ve probably heard that bonsai trees make wonderful gifts for any occasion, and are known to bring a sense of peace and harmony to their environment.

Before you pick up your new bonsai tree, please keep these simple care tips in mind:
- Water the bonsai only when the soil is dry
- Place your bonsai where temperatures don’t change rapidly, such as under A/C vents
- Allow the tree to get at least 2 hours of sunlight each day
- Avoid moving the tree when possible, as it adjusts to the changes very slowly
